Accept Reject The one serious MacBook Pro security flaw that nobody is talking about Every MacBook since 2015 and every MacBook Pro since 2016 is at risk.
Here's how you can keep your machines safe.
MacBook Pro's USB-C port: An unexpected security headache One of Han Macbook pro 2020 slots on right side trademark lines was "I've got a bad feeling about this.
Yes, there have been based on how hot the machine gets.
And yes, there's always the.
Even if every other precaution has been taken, the mere necessity of keeping the devices charged up puts machines at risk.
Plus there's the lack of ports.
I make active use of the USB 3.
I'm aware of them.
It's been something else.
Something that can be trouble for any modern MacBook Pro user.
But for weeks, I haven't been able to identify what was causing the tickle on the back of my neck.
Then, last night, as I plugged my current MacBook Pro into its snuggly MagSafe 2 power connector, I thought, "I'm going to miss the convenience of this.
It's the USB-C ports.
Because of the USB-C ports, all MacBook Pros introduced since late 2016 are inherently check this out />Likewise, all of the 12-inch MacBooks introduced since 2015 are inherently unsafe.
It's all about the power Okay, follow along with me.
With my 2015 MacBook equipped with a MagSafe port, if I want to charge the machine, I just plug it in.
There's no risk of a data connection.
As long as I have networking off and nothing plugged into any of my ports, I'm safe.
I'm air-gapped from the rest of the world.
MacBooks before 2015 and MacBook Pros before 2016 could charge without any risk, as long as everything else was off, empty, or disconnected.
Also: Prior to the USB C-only MacBook Macbook pro 2020 slots on right side, at least charging the device wasn't a possible hacking vector.
But with theand for thethe only way you can charge the notebook is by connecting to a USB-C port.
In order to charge the machine, you must connect to a port capable of transferring data.
You have no choice.
For Apple, a company whose enhanced security has been one of its main selling points for years, this is a short-sighted, potentially brand-damaging, and dangerous decision.
In Europe, it could be worse To be fair, this has long been a problem with iPhones until.
To charge any iPhone via cable, you've always had to plug in a data-capable connector, whether it was or the Lightning connector.
For other smartphones, the problem is similar, macbook pro 2020 slots on right side most phones used micro USB connectors, and now, most use USB-C connectors.
From a security point of view, wireless charging, like that on the newer iPhones andcan be a substantially safer way to go, because you're able to charge the devices without ever plugging in a data-capable cable.
Of course, at least for Android devices, there are that can enter the device via text, email, browsing, and p0wn3d apps, but at least one path of least resistance can be closed up.
In Europe, though, USB-C could be a real problem.
The a switch to USB-C as the standard connector for all phones.
Read also: Related Stories 5G While continue reading type of standardization does have its benefits, if the Macbook pro 2020 slots on right side extends its USB-C demands to notebook computers, those computers that still charge with macbook pro 2020 slots on right side, dedicated charging connectors might be forced to use a data-capable connector for charging.
While Apple has moved all its notebooks to USB C-based charging, many Windows-based laptops can still be air-gapped while charging.
Why worry about this I kind of like to use the adapters and dongles that come with the products I buy.
Maybe you do, too.
At this macbook pro 2020 slots on right side, though, I'm willing to bet that most of us have a bin of dongles, adapters, and cables of uncertain origins.
It's not unusual to borrow cables, dongles, and chargers when we're caught with our batteries down.
That was all well and good back when MacBooks required Apple-made chargers.
Even then, there were aftermarket providers.
But now, you're expected to plug your USB-C adapter into a MacBook Pro on one side, and into a possibly random USB charger on the other.
That's where the trouble begins.
As far back as 2013, CBS News reported on in this case, for iPhones.
Last year, I wrote about how USB chargers are available that not only charge devices, but.
Spying isn't the only problem.
Many of the fake brand name or inexpensive aftermarket chargers are unsafe as well.
This is such an ongoing problem even with Lightning cables that.
Now, let's take the risk up a notch.
Apple products are in active use in some very sensitive operations.
Back in the day, President Obama was known to use and.
In 2016, the US Department of Defense may or may not have dodged this bullet.
Also: Simple steps can make the difference between losing your online accounts or maintaining what is now a precious commodity: Your privacy.
Since the first USB-C equipped MacBook Pros were announced in October of that year, andthe DoD may have been delivered pre-USB-C devices.
On the other hand, since nothing in the government runs on time, it's entirely possible that thousands of those machines plug into the wall via a USB-C connection.
Of course, macbook pro 2020 slots on right side government isn't alone.
Some include thousands of Macs sold to GE, IBM, SAP, and Capital One.
The scenario is troubling.
All that has to happen to corrupt some of these massive deployments is the substitution of a USB charger.
Even if every other precaution has been taken, the mere necessity of keeping the devices charged up puts machines at risk.
Prior to the USB-C-only MacBook Pros, at least charging the device wasn't a possible hacking link />There's no doubt there are.
But there once apologise, animal jam sloth dance can a time when the mere act of charging was safe.
Now, with MacBooks and MacBook Pros, even that's a potentially serious security risk.
How to stay safe Here's what I recommend.
If you must buy mobile Macs, make sure you.
As long as the company is careful with its supply chain, you can be reasonably assured of staying safe.
Even buying from Amazon might not be as secure.
As for your phones -- especially if you work in a high-securty environment -- you, too, would do well to buy your USB adapters directly from Apple.
If you're in the DoD, the White House, or in an environment where a hack could be devastating, toss out those no-name imported adapters and buy your dongles from the vendor who makes your phones.
Beyond dongles and adapters, there's a wide range of best practices for keeping your devices safe.
That's beyond the scope of this article, but read around on, and for tons of great advice.
While the new i9 MacBook Pro could do the job, I don't really need another notebook.
What I really want is an.

And the Touch Bar is cool right now, with potential to spare.
Consumers have their preferences; professional users have theirs.
Fast-forward to late 2016.
Apple, however, does care about computers being thin and light.
It loves to fuss over basic aspects of the experience such as screen quality.
And it wants to introduce features that macbook pro 2020 slots on right side Macs stand out from the the Windows-PC competition, such as its unique new.
Judged on those priorities, the new MacBook Pros are, in most respects, winners—assuming you can deal with their price tags.
Photo: Harry McCracken If you own a MacBook Air, you should know that Apple ups its build-quality game with the Pro line.
As they should at these prices.
As it did withApple made these new Macs thinner in part by equipping them with a keyboard designed not to eat up much vertical space.
Slightly improved in this new iteration, it sports keys that are roomy, stable, nicely sculpted, and illuminated with perfectly even backlighting.
My fingers which are adjusted quickly and found the results comfy.
The extra real estate is a particular boon for maneuvers that call st louis poker tournament 2020 precision, such as painting in Photoshop, as well as MacOS gestures that require you to splay your fingers out on the trackpad surface.
Apple has done a sweeping, imaginative job of building Touch Bar functionality into MacOS.
Coming soon: third-party apps with Touch ID support, such as a version of login manager 1Password.
To the left of the Touch ID macbook pro 2020 slots on right side, instead of the top row of function keys that have been part of computer keyboards since mainframe days, is the long, skinny, touch-enabled OLED display known as the Touch Bar.
This is the first time Apple has made Macs you can control by tapping on a screen, and you might instinctively use the touchscreen PCs that are common in the Windows world as a reference point.
Apple underlined that point by giving the Touch Bar a predominantly black-and-white color scheme that matches that of the adjacent physical keys; even its surface feels much like the nearby keycaps.
As I used it, I tended to forget it was a screen at all.
Photo: Harry McCracken Conceptually, the Touch Bar offers two related benefits.
With just a tap or two, it lets you access features that would ordinarily require you to swipe a mouse pointer around using the trackpad or a mouse.
It gives click the following article virtual keys for tweaking the brightness 2020 joycasino volume, managing windows, and performing other jobs that the old keys did.
But the Control Strip, unlike the plastic keys it replaces, is customizable.
Fine—you can drag it onto the Touch Bar as a substitute for one of the default buttons.
In that instance, the Control Strip collapses down on the right side of the Touch Bar, and the rest of the space is devoted to functions specific to the task at hand.
Touch Bar word and emoji suggestions Macbook pro 2020 slots on right side has done a sweeping, imaginative job of building Touch Bar functionality into MacOS and the apps that ship with it.
In Photos, for instance, you can dig deeply into the features for fiddling with an image without removing your finger from the Touch Bar.
In Safari, you can skim through teensy half-a-pinky-size thumbnails of your open tabs.
In the Numbers spreadsheet, you can construct formulas and format cells.
In Reminders, you can check off completed to-dos or give yourself more time to tackle them.
And on and on.
Some apps—but not all of them—let you customize their Touch Bar capabilities in the the same way you can rearrange the Control Strip.
At the MacBook Pro launch event, Adobe previewed that could make it a lot simpler to make the most of that notoriously opaque program.
By the end of the year, Apple says, a bunch of other popular MacOS apps will support the Touch Bar, including Microsoft Office, Skype, OmniFocus, Pixelmator, Coda, Sketch, and more.
Hardcore touch typists will have to adjust their work habits.
Assuming that third-party developers take the Touch Bar seriously—and Apple puts it on other machines, such as the iMac—it could become an indispensable part of the Mac interface.
Apple provides some tips and tricks, but something closer to a full-blown interactive tutorial might have been in order.
Hardcore touch typists will also have to adjust their work habits: The Touch Bar requires you to at least peek at your keyboard as you work.
But it turned out I could only do that in the full-width Control Strip, not the reduced-size one.
On the Touch Bar, your Safari tabs are really tiny Ultimately, not every Mac user is going to take to the Touch Bar.
When Apple takes bulk out of a laptop, it often does so in part this web page retiring components that it thinks are headed for the parts graveyard anyway, such as DVD burners and Ethernet jacks.
The previous MacBook Pros had a MagSafe power connector, two USB ports, two Thunderbolt 2 ones, an HDMI jack for TV hookups, a headphone jack, and an SD memory-card slot.
Between them, the vision is to let you plug into AC adapters, displays, storage devices, and more, all using one do-everything port.
Fast Company contributor Glenn Fleishman does a good job of sorting out the details, which are manifold, in.
Even with a MacBook Pro with plentiful ports, the issue remains that Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C are not yet anything like commonplace.
Devices such as desktop monitors, hard disks, and thumb drives that are built for them are still greatly outnumbered by ones designed for earlier standards.
Or in some cases you might just go wireless: For instance, Apple says that it ditched the SD slot in part because so many new cameras ship with built-in Wi-Fi.
The company has always been willing to usher customers into a period of disruptive transition in order to help propagate new standards.
This is a strikingly different philosophy than that practiced by many makers of Windows PCs—companies such as Dell will still sell you a laptop with an elephantine, 1980s-era VGA port if that is what you want.
As in previous instances, the fact that Apple has embraced these new technologies with such gusto should help nudge the rest of the industry to do the same that much quicker.
New power adapter: no MagSafe, no cord-wrapping wings.
The new brick, which looks like a giant iPhone charger, lacks them.
They just make that new computer better once you have it, and are the sort of improvements that Apple never gets enough credit for making.
Apple also lavished attention on the speakers, which you can crank way, way up without turning music or movie soundtracks into a distorted mess.
Ultimately, the design decisions that Apple made with these new-generation MacBook Pros result in machines that I think will please many people.

Gear Life With the MacBook's Single Port Won't Be Easy—Yet Apple is often spot-on when it drops ports and drives from its computers.
But with a single USB-C port, has it gone too far with the new MacBook?
Apple is betting that a single USB-C port will be enough for most casual users---exactly who the new MacBook is geared toward.
It has over the macbook pro 2020 slots on right side ditched FireWire, Ethernet, and optical drives.
Now, withit says goodbye to all but a lone.
This probably was inevitable.
Bigger than you might realize.
At least for now.
How we push data to and from our machines constantly evolves thanks to the steady progress of new standards, faster wireless connectivity, streaming services, and the cloud.
Apple tends to anticipate these changes---and in some cases force the issue, often being among the first to banish old-guard tech from its devices.
The good news is that USB-C is versatile.
The only bad news about the shift to USB-C ports is the MacBook has one of them.
Dangling Dongles Of course, there are ways to compensate, though not as many as you might think.
The cheapest, most direct way to get your USB devices to play nice with a USB-C port is a orwhose features two USB-C ports.
USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter.
Another version swaps the HDMI-out port for.
The 13-inch Air has a dedicated power connector, a Thunderbolt 2 port, an SDXC card slot, two USB 3.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro has all of that, plus an additional Thunderbolt 2 port and HDMI-out.
Would you like more ports?
Well, we have inelegant dongles and more-expensive computers for that.
That sort of set-up would be basically unworkable for pro photographers shuttling RAW files, though, and probably more trouble than it's worth even when dealing with JPEG files in any quantity.
The same solutions and limitations apply to video editors.
USB-C can handle video files zipping back and forth through an adapter or new cable, for now.
Other wireless transfer options aren't very practical for files of the sizes you'll be dealing with.
The most likely setup for a wired-in connection will be a Macbook pro 2020 slots on right side 3.
Storage Your USB-C external hard drive options are non-existent right now, but help is on the way.
This summer, SanDisk will offer a 32GB thumbdrive with USB-C and full-size USB connectors.
A LaCie external drive will offer up to 2TB of portable USB-C-connected storage when it's out later this year.
End of list so far.
Meanwhile, the new MacBook will come with up to 512GB onboard, and cloud-storage services abound these days.
That could be enough for most people, but anyone who's been stashing years of valuable files and photos and music on an external drive would be inconvenienced by a MacBook today.
Ethernet While Apple already phased out Ethernet ports across its laptop lineup, there are a few cases in which having one generally comes in handy.
For now, at least.
Or use a non-Bluetooth keyboard or mouse when your single port is occupied.
What may be the strangest USB-C fallout?
If you want to mirror your laptop screen on your television, your cheapest and best option at this point is to buy an Apple TV.
Apple hasn't yet officially announced a Lightning-to-USB-C cable.
For all we know, one may come in the MacBook box.
And here's the big thing on the horizon: Future iOS devices will likely use USB-C as their one and only port, which will be an instant fix.
Until then, click at this page need an adapter or an as-yet-unannounced cable to charge your iDevice from a MacBook.
Here's a fun resulting fact.
As of right now, it will be easier to charge an Android device with an Apple computer than to charge an iPhone or iPad with one---just as long as you have.
Again, USB-C is a standard, and it's one that will show up onso don't expect this to be an issue for long.
In many ways, this new MacBook is an exciting harbinger of a bright future, one teeming with interoperability and free of proprietary connectors.
And until we are, it's going to be a long, dongle-paved road.
