Jailbreak Your iPod Touch on a PC
This is a guide that will teach you how to jailbreak your 2nd Generation iPod Touch on a PC. Once you have jailbroken your iPod Touch you will have the applications called installer that lets you install other applications onto it. Although before you can jailbreak your iPod you need to find out what firmware version you have.
NOTE: Do not use these instructions if you have a 1st generation iPod touch if you would like to jailbreak your 1st generation iPod touch follow this guide.
To find the firmware version of your iPod:
1) Turn on your iPod and click on the application called settings.
2) Go to the section called general. It should be the third from the top.
3) Now go to the section called about. It should be the first on the list.
4) Scroll down untill you find where it says firmware version.
Congratulations now that you have found out the firmware version expand the section of this guide that applys to you and your iPod.
Please note that Apple requires you to buy certain firmware updates, only follow guides for these firmwares after you have legally purchased the update from Apple.
Firmware 2.2.1 - (GUI interface Recommended)
These are instructions on how to jailbreak your 2G iPod Touch running firmware 2.2.1 using Windows and Voltage.
1) Create a folder called Jailbreak in an easy to access location such as your desktop and download Voltage from here and place it into your newly created folder folder.
2) Extract the Voltage archive to the Jailbreak folder you created.
NOTE: You will need WinRar or another extractor installed to do this. You can download the latest version of WinRar from here.
3) Open the folder you extracted called Voltage and launch Voltage - Jailbreaker.exe
1a)
Click Begin Download to download the iPod Touch firmware 2.2.1 ipsw.
Click Save to save the firmware file to your hard drive.
When prompted for where to save the file place it in the Voltage directory that was created when you extracted the archive.
2a) Oopen the Install_Files folder which is within the Voltage folder you extracted to your Jailbreak folder. Right click the lib-win32-filter-bin-0.1.12.1.exe file and select Properties from the menu. Navigate to the Compatibility tab. Check the Run this program in compatibility mode for: box and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the dropdown list then click the OK button.
3a) Click the Begin Install button to launch the LibUSB installer. Follow the prompts to install LibUSB.
4a) Click the Begin Install button to launch the C++ Installer. Follow the prompts to complete the C++ installation.
4) Click the Select button to select the IPSW file you downloaded to the Voltage directory. Navigate to the Voltage directory and select the iPod touch 2.2.1 firmware file you downloaded then click the Open button.
5) Click the Make IPSW button to continue. A command prompt window will open and display the progress. It will close when the custom firmware ipsw is built. Click the Next Step button to continue once it has finished.
6)From the Voltage folder within the Jailbreak folder you created open the JB_Files folder. Right click the file Custom_Restore.ipsw file then select Rename. Add .zip to the end of the file name and click Yes if prompted to confirm the change of the file extension. Right click the Custom_Restore.ipsw.zip file and select Open With. Select WinRar from the list of applications that appear then click the OK button.
NOTE: You will need WinRar or another extractor installed to do this. You can download the latest version of WinRar from here.
Once WinRar opens the custom firmware, double click the Firmware folder to open it.
Then open the all_flash folder.
Then open the all_flash.n72ap.production folder.
Download the patched LLB (LLB.n72ap.RELEASE.img3) from here and drag it into the Winrar window.
An Archive name and parameters window will appear asking you if you would like to add the file to the archive. Click the OK button to continue.
WinRar will now update your archive. Close WinRar and navigate back to the JB_Files folder.
Right click Custom_Restore.ipsw.zip and select Rename.
Rename the file to Custom_Restore.ipsw and click Yes to confirm the rename.
7) Go back to Voltage and put your iPod Touch into DFU mode. The easiest way to do this is to plug the iPod into the computer then hold both buttons down for 10 seconds. Release the power button and continue holding the Home button for another 10 seconds.
To confirm the iPod is in DFU mode click the Check DFU Mode button.
Once in DFU mode click the Next Step button to continue.
8) You now need to patch the device. Click the Patch Device button.
9) Once the device has been patched you need to restore to your custom firmware to your iPod using iTunes.
iTunes will have detected an iPod in recovery (DFU) mode. Navigate to the ipod page in iTunes.
Hold down the Shift key and click the Restore button.
A window will open asking you to locate the firmware to restore to. Select the Custom_Restore.ipsw file from the Jailbreak/Voltage/JB_Files folder then click the Open button.
10) Once the firmware has been restored successfully you will have a jailbroken 2G iPod Touch!
Firmware 2.2.1 - Method 2
Before you begin you must restore your iPod Touch 2nd Generation and you will need to download C++ redistributable and LIBusb.
1. Download unofficialsn0w 2.0 for Windows and extract it to a place of your choice prefferably somewhere easily accessible.
2. Download the 2.2.1 iPod Touch Firmware HERE.
3. Rename the 2.2.1 iPod Touch Firmware file called which is called "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw" to "OriginalFW.ipsw" and place it in /IPSW folder (This folder can be found in the unofficialsn0w 2.0 folder which was extracted in step 1).
4. Run IPSW.bat (The process may take several minutes)
5. Once IPSW.bat has completed:
a.Right click on the jb.ispw and either open with Winrar or 7.zip
b.Go into Firmware/all_flashall_flash.n72ap.production
c. Delete the LLB file.(optional since it will be replaced by the new one)
d. Replace (by dragging) with the LLB file that's in the same folder as the jb.ipsw.
e. Exit, continue to step 6
6. Place your iPod Touch 2G into DFU mode, plug it in and run RUNME.exe
7. Shift + Restore in iTunes and browse for the JB.ipsw and your done!!!
Firmware 3.0
1) Create a folder on your desktop called Jailbreak
2) Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 3.0 firmware from here and place it in the same folder.
3) Extract the RedSn0w zip file to the Jailbreak folder.
4) Connect your iPod Touch to the computer and launch iTunes if it does not automatically open.
5) Select your iPod Touch from the list of devices on the left. Hold down shift and click the Restore button.
6) Navigate to the Jailbreak folder on your desktop and select the 3.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Open button to continue.
7) iTunes will then load the new firmware onto your device. Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod Touch to the desired firmware you may launch redsnw0w.exe from the Jailbreak folder on your desktop.
8) Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button.
9) Select the 3.0 firmware ipsw we placed in the Jailbreak folder on the desktop then click Open.
10) Once the firmware has been verified by RedSn0w click the Next button to continue.
11) Make sure that you have Cydia selected and click the Next button.
12) Plug your iPod Touch into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button.
13) RedSn0w will now guide you on how to put your iPod Touch into DFU mode.
Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
14) Your iPod Touch will now reboot.
15) RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk.
16) Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button.
17) When your iPod Touch finishes rebooting which will take approximately 5 minutes it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
