Jailbreak Your iPod Touch on a Pc
This is a guide that will teach you how to jailbreak your 1st Generation iPod Touch on a Pc. Once you have jailbroken your iPod Touch you will have an application called "installer" or "Cydia" which lets you install other applications onto your iPod. Before you can jailbreak your iPod you need to find out what firmware version you have.
NOTE: Do not use these instructions if you have a 2nd generation iPod Touch. If you would like to jailbreak your 2nd generation iPod Touch please follow this guide.
To find the firmware version of your iPod:
1) Turn on your iPod and click on the application called settings.
2) Go to the section called general. It should be the third from the top.
3) Now go to the section called about. It should be the first on the list.
4) Scroll down untill you find where it says firmware version.
Congratulations now that you have found out the firmware version expand the section of this guide that applys to you and your iPod Touch.
Please note that Apple requires you to buy certain firmware updates, only follow guides for these firmwares after you have legally purchased the update from Apple.
Firmware 1.1.1
1) On your iPod open the Safari applicaiton and go to jailbreakme.com
2) Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the button that says install AppSnapp
3) Once it loads it will automatically start downloading and then installing the installer application.
4) Once it finishes slide to unlock it and click on the application called installer and wait while it checks its sources, this may take a few minutes depending on how fast your internet connection is.
Firmware 1.1.2
Downgrading firmware version 1.1.2
1) Before you begin you first need to get a copy of the iPod Touch firmware version 1.1.1 which can be downloaded from here.
2) Once firmware 1.1.1 has been downloaded place it on your desktop or another location of your choice. It should be called iPod1,1_1.1.1_2A110a_Restore.ipsw
3) Plug in your iPod Touch then open iTunes and wait for it to recognize.
4) Go to the iPod source page under the summary tab and hold down the shift key, then press the button saying check for update. A window should pop-up
5) Find the firmware 1.1.1 that you earlier downloaded to your desktop and click open.
6) iTunes will then start to extract and install the 1.1.1 firmware on your iPod. NOTE: your music and videos will not be deleted from your iPod.
Upgrading from firmware version 1.1.1
1) Open to installer application and go to the section on the bottom called install.
2) From there scroll down to the section called tweaks(1.1.1) and click on the tweak OktoPrep and install it.
3) It will say you are now ready to perform an update to 1.1.2 click ok and then exit out of that and return to the home screen.
4) You now need to plug in your iPod and open iTunes.
5) From within iTunes go to the iPod source page and update your iPod to firmware version 1.1.2
1) If iTunes says you have the current version of firmware already then go here and download the 1.1.2 firmware to your desktop or another location of your choice.
2) Now extract the firmware file from .zip file you just downloaded to your desktop or another location of your choice.
3) Then from iTunes in the iPod source page press the shift key and then click on the button saying check for updates.
4) A window will pop-up, select the 1.1.2 firmware that you downloaded to your desktop or alternative and let it install.
5) Once done updating your iPod will restart and you will see that the installer application is gone so it needs to be re-jailbroken.
6) Press control + alt + delete and close any processes have the word iPod, iTunes, or Apple in them (make sure you show all processes from users).
7) Go here and download the .zip file. As this is downloading go to your desktop and create a folder called jailbreak 1.1.2
8) Once the file is done downloading extract the files into the jailbreak 1.1.2 folder you just created.
9) Open up the jailbreak 1.1.2 folder and double-click the file called windows.
10) A window should pop up, when it does select install ssh. The password is alpine, it will then install which may take a few minutes.
11) When it finished installing a pop-up saying it has successfully completed will appear and should prompt you to re-boot your iPod. Once it has been re-booted click ok.
12) You should now have the installer application and SSH on your iPod, letting you access hundreds of 3rd-party applications on your now jailbreaken ipod Touch.
Firmware 1.1.3
1) Go here and download the file to your desktop.
2) Make sure you plug in your iPod and close iTunes .
3) Open the file you just downloaded and extract the folder to your desktop or an alternative location of your choice.
NOTE: Steps 4 - 8 are also in the READ ME file.
4) First download the 1.1.1 firmware from here and save it to your desktop.
6) Now run iphuc.exe from the folder. If iphuc does not run try turning off your anti-virus program and then run the program or running the program as administrator.
7) When iphuc is open make sure your iPod is connected to your computer then type in "enterrecovery" (no quotes) then press enter.
NOTE: Your iPod is supposed to turn off and show the connect to computer sign on your iPod.
8) Now type in "filecopytophone WTF.s5l89900xall.RELEASE.dfu" (no quotes; This command is case-sensative so make sure you type it in exactly as is) then press enter.
NOTE: If this is done right it will say: filecopytophone:0
9) Next type in "cmd go" (no quotes) then press enter, and then wait 3-5 minutes then exit out of iphuc .
10) Now open iTunes (your iPod should still have the connect to computer sign on it).
11) When iTunes opens and has detected an iPod in recovery mode and you must restore. Click ok.
12) Now hold down the shift key and press the restore button. A pop-up window should appear asking you to open the firmware file you downloaded earlier. So go to where you saved it and double click the firmware 1.1.1 file. A new window should pop-up saying extracting software, then preparing iPod for restore, your iPod screen may change colour but just let it run it may take a few minutes.
After it has finished unplug your iPod. If the connect to iTunes symbol shows up dont worry just give your iPod a moment to think, it should go away.
NOTE: If the process does not work the first time don't worry just try again.
Firmware 1.1.2 - 1.1.4 Quick Method
Using Ziphone (Recomended)
Note: If you have a previously jailbroken iPod to make sure that to ensure the process works properly you should restore your iPod.
1) Plug in your iPod Touch and make sure that it is recognized by iTunes
2) Go here and download the latest version of Ziphone for windows.
3) Once you have downloaded the file run the .exe which will ask you to extract the files to the default folder or another folder of your choice.
4) The file called ZiPhoneGUI.exe should open automatically, if it doesn't then open the folder that it was extracted and run the file ZiPhoneGUI.exe. (It is recomended that you run the file as an administrator to make sure that it works properly.)
5) Click the button that says Jailbreak and just let the program work.
When it has finished working your iPod will be jailbroken and you will see the application called installer. This will let you access and install the thousands of third-party applications available for your iPod Touch.
Using iLiberty+ (1.1.4 Only)
Note: Make sure your iPod has been restored to factory settings using firmware 1.1.4 and that it is connected to your computer and reconized by iTunes.
1) Download the file iLibertySetup_1.3.0.113.exe from here to your desktop or an alternative location of your choice.
2) Launch the iLiberty+ aplication you just downloaded.
3) Click the next button and begin the installation.
4) Follow the installation instructions and press install when you are prompted.
5) Once the installation is complete a box will pop up, make sure you check where it says launch iLiberty+, then press finish.
6) iLiberty+ will open to the standard tab, select the box that says Jaibreak.
7) Now click the button that says Go for it!
NOTE: You may be asked to disconnect your iTouch and reconnect it then press ok.
8) A status bar should then appear, it may disappear when installing. You will know that the process is finished when the slide to unlock screen appears on your iTouch.
Firmware 2.0 - 2.0.2
1) Download Winpwn from here, and make sure you have iTunes 7.7 or newer which can be downloaded from here.
2) Install winpwn by following the on screen instructions.
NOTE: Winpwn uses dotnet framework so if it crashes when you load it, make sure you have the latest dotnet framework installed.
3)Open the Winpwn program.
4) Click the custom button.
5) Click the phone device that says iPod Touch.
6) Select your logos by clicking the left or right device to select between boot logo (left) or restore logo (right). By default it is set to find a logo on your local disk. Click the yellow browse package button to change it to search online.
7) Now you will be asked if you need help getting into DFU mode press the green thumbs up (yes) unless you already know how.
7a) Turn off your phone. Hold power, slide to power off, and wait. Once that is done press the green thumbs up sign on the dialog box that just just popped up.
7b) Now that it's off, you will follow the steps to get into DFU mode. Press the buttons as the pictures tell you. If you do it right, it will be working even though you have no display on your phone!
Now wait while your device is being jailbroken. The app will upload to your device a ram disk and then execute it. The app will finish a few minutes before the device is done. So just wait patiently for your device to reboot.
Firmware 2.1
Before you begin make sure that you have already updated your iPod to firmware 2.1 and you have the latest version of itunes which can be downloaded from here.
NOTE: Note this will not work unless you update through iTunes, and use iTunes to download the firmware file.
1) Download the Quickpwn application from here, and extract it to your desktop.
2) Now download the fimware 2.1 file from here.
3) Plug in your iPod.
4) Wait for your iPod to finish syncing and then close iTunes when completly.
5)Run the QuickPwn.exe file which you extracted earlier.
6) Follow the on screen instructions
7) Once QuickPwn has verified the firmware press next and check off the box saying Add Cydia.
NOTE: Do not select Replace boot logos, however you may select Add Installer if you wish although it is slightly buggy in firmware 2.1, it is recommended not to Add Installer.
9) Once you press next follow the on screen instructions and once the process is completed you now have a newly jailbroken iPod touch with firmware 2.1
Firmware 2.2
1) Download QuickPwn 2.2 here.
2) Download the 2.2 IPSW File from here.
3) Extract and run the QuickPwn GUI application that you downloaded in Step 1.
4) Connect your device to the computer and follow the on-screen directions from QuickPwn
4a) If you have any troubles with an indivdual step refer to the Firmware 2.1 section of this guide.
5) Once your device reboots, it will be jailbroken and ready.
Note: Wait until your iPod has completly restarted before you close the program and disconnect it.
Firmware 3.0
1) Create a folder on your desktop called Jailbreak
2) Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Jailbreak folder. Likewise, download the latest 3.0 firmware from here and place it in the same folder.
3) Extract the RedSn0w zip file to the Jailbreak folder you created.
4) Connect your iPod Touch to the computer and launch iTunes.
5) Select your iPod Touch from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down shift and click the Restore button.
6) Navigate to the Jailbreak folder on your desktop and select the firmware ipsw you downloaded earlier and click the Open button.
7) Once iTunes has finished updating your iPod Touch to the 3.0 firmware you may launch redsnw0w.exe from the Jailbreak folder on your desktop.
8) Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button.
9) Select the 3.0 firmware ipsw in the Jailbreak folder on the desktop then click Open.
10) Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.
11) Select Cydia and click the Next button.
12) Plug your iPod Touch into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button
13) RedSn0w will now ask you to put your iPod in DFU mode.
Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.
14) Wait while your iPod Touch reboots.
15) RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk.
16) Once this is complete RedSn0w will tell you that it is done and will ask you to click the Finish button.
17) When your iPod Touch finishes rebooting in about 5 minutes it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.
